Bernie Duffy

Artist Statement

I have been drawing and painting since I was a child. My family moved to Enfield, CT, when I was 13 years old. I met my wife, Joan when we were both in high school and married shortly thereafter. After serving in the United States Navy during the Vietnam Era we returned to Enfield, Ct to settle and raise our two sons, Joel and Jason. We now have two wonderful daughters-in-law and 3 grandchildren. While working as an Enfield Police Officer, I graduated from Western New England University with a BS in Law enforcement. After spending 25 years with the Enfield Police Department, I retired as a Lieutenant and went on to take another position as Captain with the East Windsor Police Department and retired after 12 years.

Upon retirement, I joined the Tobacco Valley Artists Association and started painting seriously. I have been in numerous art shows and have had my work recognized with awards. Currently, I am a member of several art associations. Tobacco Valley Artists Association, Peace River Plein Air Artists, Agawam Community Artists and Artisans and others.

For the most part, I am a self-taught painter but have taken both private and college level art courses. I describe my art as leaning toward impressionism/expressionist, but I drift into abstract on occasion.

My work is colorful, and my style is such that at times different works look like different artists did the pieces. I describe myself as an oil painter, but I do work with acrylics, pastels, watercolor, mixed media and have done a few 3-D pieces.

Bernie’s work can be seen at the 3rd Annual Arts and Crafts Festival at the Polish American Club on Saturday August 27 and Sunday August 28, 2022.
