< Back JOE BURGER Mediums / Interests: WATERCOLOR Originally from Buffalo NY, Joe Burger earned his Bachelor’s in Engineering Science from the University of Detroit in 1967. He initially joined Hamilton Standard and then Combustion Engineering’s Nuclear Power division where he retired in 2009 after 39 years of service. Joe began his art journey in 2010, beginning with a series of classic aircraft drawings in pencil, later expanding to watercolor and pastel mediums. Watercolor is currently his preferred medium, usually in the traditional realistic style. Joe has learned from some of the very best artists in the region, beginning with an adult ed class, and then through private lessons and workshops. Joe has won numerous awards in local exhibits and is an active member of several art organizations. He has conducted many demonstrations and workshops on understanding perspective, reflections, shadows, and the like, to help other artists on the road to better paintings. Currently he’s an instructor at the Windsor Locks Senior Center and Arts Center East in Vernon CT. Joe especially enjoys the challenge of commissioned work, anything from fighter jets to homesteads to puppy portraits and anything in between. < Back PAT HAYES Mediums / Interests: FABRIC I am a silk artist and I create one-of-a-kind hand dyed silk scarves and accessories. Each piece begins as white silk and is overdyed a number of times using the multiple immersion method. Many pieces are further enhanced with stenciling or painting with thickened dyes or fabric paints. I exhibit my work through craft fairs and shows locally and at the Cape. In addition, I am an art therapist and I taught workshops through a grant from Baystate's Rays of Hope Walk/Run towards a cure for breast cancer for over twenty years. < Back JOAN NELSON Mediums / Interests: OIL, PASTEL, EGG TEMPURA, ACRYLIC, WATERCOLOR, PHOTOGRAPHY, SCULPTURE, FIBER ARTS Joan Nelson is an award-winning artist from Western Massachusetts, working from her studio at Indian Orchard Mills as well as her home studio. She works in a variety of media, primarily, Egg Tempera, Acrylic, and Watercolor; but will use whatever medium she feels best suited to the subject. Egg Tempera is her favorite - the bright, clear colors and fast drying time can't be matched by any other medium. Joan is known mostly for her finely detailed paintings of birds, but other subjects range from portraiture to whimsical art. She accepts commissions of most subjects. She also enjoys making One of A Kind Art Dolls, either from cloth, clay, or a mixture of both. Each doll takes on a personality of its own as it evolves from the choice of fabrics, fibers, and paints. Joan's goal for each piece created is to instill feelings of happiness in the viewer, and to find beauty equally in both the special and commonplace. She spends a great amount of time out photographing birds and nature for inspiration and reference. She has received numerous awards in many shows, including several First place and Best of Shows. Her work is in many private collections, and she currently has pieces at J.H. Miller's in West Springfield, and at Handworks Gallery in Acton. She teaches children's art classes sponsored by the Red Thread Network for The Arts at Mitteneague Park in West Springfield and offers classes for teens and adults at her studio in Indian Orchard Mills.
